There really is an insurance product for everything, says Caitlin Jennings, Account Executive at Rein4ce. Ahead of Valentine’s Day this weekend, she takes a look at some of the weird and wonderful insurance products you can get to protect the things you love.
Valentine’s Day is only three days away, and nothing says romance more than insurance! While most people will be thinking about red roses, boxes of chocolates and a candlelight dinner, I decided to take a different approach and instead researched what insurance products there are available related to love. A simple Google search will provide you with your basic list of products to protect your most precious things such as insurance for an expensive piece of jewellery or life insurance. (Although I don’t think life insurance says love – but maybe I’ve been listening to too many true crime podcasts!)
My research took me further afield to your non-traditional love insurance, below are my top three.
Unlike in the west, in Japanese culture it is traditional for the woman to give presents to a man – typically chocolate. According to Japan Today, so much chocolate is bought around Valentine’s Day that Japanese chocolate companies record half of their annual sales in the lead up to February 14th.
Are you a single Japanese man worried about not getting a gift this Sunday? Fear not – there is an insurance policy for you! For only $5.50 (in 2013), policyholders will receive a Valentine’s Day package that will contain a box of chocolates and a personal message from ‘a beautiful lady’ named Rieko.
2. Cold feet insurance
It’s standard practice when you book your wedding to take out insurance to cover the worst happening, such as the venue going out of business or a supplier pulling out at the last minute. However, your standard wedding insurance will not cover you for cold feet – if either the bride or groom change their minds about wanting to get married. Currently, Wedsure the US-based wedding insurance company will include cold feet insurance in your insurance package, and policies start at $125.
So, remember, if you have any worries that your significant other will change their mind about wanting to get married, be sure to check the fine print on your policy – and I wish you a long and happy life together!
3. Multiple births insurance
When a man and woman love each other very much… you get the picture. It is estimated that 1 in 250 pregnancies will result in twins, and while this can be exciting, it is also very expensive. In the UK, you can hedge your bets against the possibility of having twins by buying insurance – which might make sense if you have a family history of twins or have already had a multiple birth.
Expecting women can take out multiple birth insurance at the early stage of pregnancy – before the first ultrasound – and if the pregnancy results in a multiple birth, they will receive a lump sum of cash.
So, on the 14th February if you are celebrating Valentine’s Day, do something different this year – get the people you love insurance.
